Dear Humans,
I hope you all are doing well but I am not. I have to write this letter after all the resources were exhausted. I am currently writing you this letter from the depths of the Hasdav Forest, a place once teeming with life and beauty which soon will be destroyed in pieces because you want to mine all resources. If you don’t believe me still, I have included a few facts for you to understand my issue better.
According to recent research conducted by you, deforestation rates in the Western Ghats, where I live, have grown by 26% over the last decade. This dangerous trend is being driven by illicit logging, land conversion for agriculture and construction, and fuelwood gathering.
My ecology suffers greatly as a result of deforestation. Many species, including the rare Nilgiri langur and Malabar civet, are on the verge of extinction. Habitat fragmentation has altered biological processes and reduced animal mobility.
The decrease of forest cover has resulted in serious water shortages in the region. My forests perform an important role in managing water cycles for nearby communities, but when they are destroyed, water supplies dry up, impacting both your children and mine.
Furthermore, deforestation has caused soil erosion, landslides, and increased floods. The removal of tree roots destabilizes the soil, making it more prone to erosion and landslides after heavy rains. This can have a severe impact on local communities and infrastructure. You already suffered flash floods in Uttarakhand, Wayanad and now here too.
Please, I ask you to stop. My people complained, and my creatures came to plead for an end to that terrifying sound, but no one listened. I implore you all to recognize the calamity you are creating with your own hands. Consider future generations, who deserve to inherit a world with healthy forests and diverse ecosystems. Remember that we are all interconnected. This destruction will not profit you in the long run. YOu already have many examples still you are creating new examples. Kids of my brother Mountain asked for the 6th schedule to protect their place, but I already held the 5th schedule, and still, you haven’t taken our permission.
I would like to request collaboration. A collaboration where your efforts and my resources could bring a better future for all not just one party.
Thanks for reading my request. I hope you all will consider my request.
Sincerely,
The Hasdav Forest
