“The Earth is what we all have in common, progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”
Environmental Education Day is celebrated every January 26th. It all started when it was first celebrated in 1975, when the International Seminar of Environmental Education was organised in Belgrade, Serbia. The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of this important date in the environmental world, half a century in which it has been a pillar for empowering and enabling the future generation to be more aware and to promote a more sustainable world. The celebration allows environmental problems to be identified at both global and local environmental levels.
Over half a decade since the first ever celebration of the environmental education day, governors and countries have been promoting the “environmental crisis” yet still underestimate the true effects of climate change. Confusion, the reason it is underestimated even by scientists. As part of a large society, it is not wrong that we still have no idea how important it might be. Environmental awareness is to understand and not just know the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection. The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We can’t say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.
Before getting to the big part, we must first understand the environmental movement. Environmentalism is an ideology that evokes the responsibility of humans to respect and preserve the natural world from human’s afflictions regarding concerns for environmental protection. So, as a conclusion, environmental awareness is an integral part of the movement’s success. It is a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to help. As a result, individuals would develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make responsible decisions.
The earth is a fine place and worth fighting for, so as individuals we all need to understand that to take actions, we don’t need to wait. It's now or never. By doing some simple steps you are in the path of helping nature to bring back it’s best hope to the future generation. So here are some things you could do :
Introduce the 3 R’s: reduce waste, reuse resources, and recycle materials
Organise tree planting days and explain why trees are important for the environment
Switch off all appliances and lights when not in use
Ensure taps are closed properly after you have used them and use water sparingly
And by just doing small steps you have provided every person with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, values, and skills needed to protect the environment. Let us all use the technology and the things that are given not to conquer nature, but to live in it.
